The Magic in 4000 Characters – the UK Medicine Personal Statement

When I see blood, I bring forth my compassion. Others fret or faint!

You know you are made for the noble profession of medicine when you can handle the sight of blood, genuinely love to learn about the human anatomy, and can manage long hours of routine work and people interaction without flinching or falling short of patience. You are sure you have all this, and more.

Now how do you convey this to the admissions committee at the medical school in the UK university of your choice?

The Medicine Personal Statement asks for 4000 characters (with spaces) or 47 lines of an essay from you to showcase your aptitude and leaning towards this field of study, your grit and determination to pass through and succeed through its extremely rigorous curriculum, your vision of what and why you will do at the end of your medical bachelor’s education, and what you have done till now to prepare yourself for undertaking the course.

It is actually easy to write this personal statement if you just keep the descriptions of all your activities brief and to the point. The main elements include, but are bigger and beyond than doctor shadowing, volunteering at medical facilities or care homes, reading the field related books and journals, doing online courses, building your team work, alertness, listening and empathetic abilities with meaningful activities; and lastly gathering information about the UK education system and why it is the one you are opting for.

You also need to convince the university that you have the ability to thrive in constantly changing and challenging environment; embrace diversity and can take on the physically and mentally strenuous daily routines of a doctor’s profession. Just a statement telling that you are resilient and determined won’t make a mark, but sharing that you dealt patiently with a distraught ill child or cared for an ailing old person will. The essay needs to thus include real life instances and anecdotes that relate to how you first thought of this profession, how it developed into a firm career choice, and the ways you have helped yourself in preparation for your medical degree course.

Finally, it helps if you already have a vision for the future specialization, know about the current developments and innovations in the medical field, have taken an internship in a medical set up, and done projects, reading and research on the specialization of your choice.
